Pigeon Forge sits in the valley just outside Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and most of what you rent here is a cabin up the ridge above the town, with a deck, a hot tub and a view over forested mountains.

The town itself is unapologetically a holiday town: Dollywood, go-karts, pancake houses and dinner shows along the parkway. Ten minutes further on is Gatlinburg and the park entrance, where the hiking and the waterfalls are.

Autumn is the headline season here, when the hardwood colour comes down the mountains, and it books further ahead than any other time of year.
